What Is Pervasive Developmental Disorder?

Many doctors are not diagnosing children with autism. They are diagnosing them with pervasive developmental disorder. Also known as pdd or pdd-nos. Our son was diagnosed with PDD, not autism. I later found out, that pervasive developmental disorder is autism. Some doctors are reluctant to tell a parent that their child has autism. So there are a variety of choices that can be used.

PDD stands for Pervasive Development Disorder.

PDD-NOS stands for Pervasive Development Disorder Not Otherwise Specified.

AS stands for Asperger Syndrome.

AD stands for Autistic Disorder.

CDD stands for Childhood Disintegrative Disorder.

SDD stands for Specific Developmental Disorders.

All of the above are a form of AUTISM. The spectrum of autism is pretty huge. From mild to severe yet all apart of a family tree. The above diagnosis have several things in common. They all show a delays in ones ability with socialization, communication and behaviors. Global delays are usually detected before the age of 3. None of these things affect the life expectancy of the person.

Symptoms of the above are because a child is having difficulty using and understanding language. They are showing difficulty relating to people, objects and events. Children show delays in talking, playing with other children and relating to others, including their family. Doctors look for impairments in social interaction skills, communication skills or problems with behaviors.

Currently 1 out of 150 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. 1 out of 94 boys. And the numbers are not going down. Boys are affected more than girls. Some children show early symptoms of autism.

Doctors look for impairment in many different areas. A child will show delays or problems in the following areas:

Failure to make and maintain eye contact.

The inability to make or read another persons facial expressions.

Children show poor body postures.

The inability to make gestures or talk.

The inability to get along socially.

The child does not have friends.

A child is not sharing enjoyment and interest with others.

The inability to play make believe. Imaginative play is hard for them or non-existent.

A child is inflexible. Has meltdowns when asked to change their routine.

Shows repetitive behaviors. Like flapping the arms, head banging, lining things up, pushing buttons over and over on battery operated toys, finger flapping or twisting.

Use of language inappropriately. Like repeating lines from a movie or a video. Language is meaningless to them. This is called echolalia when there language is echoing something they have heard.

They love static environments. They want things to stay the same. They feel safe when things are predictable. They do not like the unknown.

Children with pervasive developmental disorder show an acceleration in their head growth between the ages of 5 and 48 months. They sometimes lose skills. They sometimes never develop skills. They show problems with sleeping through the night and have difficulty with potty training. They almost always show bowel problems. Constipation, diarrhea and bloating of the the stomach. They are picky eaters. Often limiting the food choices to dairy, wheat or french fries.
